The View from Above, Class 9 of 10
The Loss of Identity
Who am I?
A class about the question “who am I?” when a role, relationship, or identity you relied on is gone, and about the Integrity it takes to find out what actually still stands.
What This Class Teaches
This class helps someone learn to separate identity borrowed from a role from identity that's genuinely their own, values and character that remain, even when a role is gone.
The Hike Lesson
“I need to know who I am as an individual, what I stand for, and what my values are.”
Only the Prologue and the opening of Chapter 1 of “The View From Above” were recovered as the author's own written words, told in full on this page. This class's own place in the hike exists in the source archive only as an audiobook chapter and video, without a transcript, so it couldn't be independently recovered here. What follows is Dorian's own directly-supplied recognition and lesson for this class, in his own words, not further invented scene detail.
The Virtue Family, Integrity
Every person already carries Integrity, whether or not it feels awake right now. This class doesn't ask you to acquire it, it asks what Integrity can help you notice.
What It Can Look Like
- Naming a value a role let you express (patience, love, responsibility) and recognizing it's still yours, without the role.
- Acting from a value that has nothing to do with any title, and noticing that it's still fully you.
- Giving yourself real time to answer a hard question about yourself, rather than forcing a quick reinvention.
Personal Recognition
Nothing here has to be shared with anyone. These are just for you.
The role or identity that changed
Name it plainly.
The values underneath the role
What did that role let you express, love, responsibility, care?
What still stands, without the role
Which of those values are still true about you right now?
Chemistry Recognition
Integrity includes Authenticity, Character, Principles, and more. Which one already shows up when you think of what you'd want to still be true about you, no matter what role you hold?
Practice
Once this week, notice one moment you act from a value that has nothing to do with any role, and name to yourself: “this is mine, independent of any title.”
What Becomes Possible
Not a promise of a fully settled sense of identity. What can become possible is recognizing real, durable values and character that remain true, even when a role that once expressed them has changed.
Whatever this class brought up for you, a recognition, a question, something you disagree with, something you're still turning over, take it into a private AVAIA conversation, in your own words, at your own pace, kept entirely yours.
