The Chemistry of Virtue

123 virtues across 10 families. In AVAIA these are the elements a conversation works with — how strengths interact to support understanding, restoration, and intentional participation. Every name and definition here is drawn from the AVAIA source materials.

AVAIA calls this the Chemistry of Virtue because it works like a periodic table — 123 elements of virtue organized across 10 families. Explore the table below.

How to read this

AVAIA calls this the Chemistry of Virtue because it works the way the real periodic table does: 10 broad families of strength — like Wisdom or Justice — each contain several individual elements, like Discernment or Fairness. Every element here is a virtue; “family” and “element” are just two different scales of the same 123 virtues.

Families → Elements → Formulas → How it shows up in your life

Wisdom

Wisdom is using good judgment, which enables us to make responsible decisions that are both good for us and good for others.

Justice

Justice is respecting the rights of all persons, including ourselves. It includes many of the interpersonal virtues that offer dignity to a person.

Fortitude

Fortitude helps us make the hard right decision instead of the easy wrong one. It is the strength that enables us to overcome and withstand the hardships, defeats, inconveniences, and pain that comes with life.

Self-Control

Also known as the virtue Temperance, it is the ability to self-govern ourselves. It enables us to control our appetites and passions, and delay instant gratification as we work for our own higher goals.

Love

Love goes beyond Justice because it offers more than fairness requires. Selfless love includes the willingness to sacrifice one's own self for the sake of someone else, and expecting nothing in return.

Positive Attitude

With a Positive Attitude, you are an asset to yourself and others around you. Hope, enthusiasm, being easy-going, and a sense of humor are characteristics and strengths of one who has a positive attitude.

Hard Work

There is no substitute in life for Hard Work. It includes initiative, diligence, goal-setting, and resourcefulness.

Integrity

Integrity is different than honesty (being truthful with others) because we are being honest with ourselves and who we authentically are. It is being consistent in our actions and words in any given situation.

Gratitude

Gratitude is the secret to a happy life. It is being thankful for the little things that help us truly be happy and help us find joy. It is an act of our own choosing.

Humility

Humility may be the foundation of a person living a truly moral life because it is being aware of our own imperfections and having a willingness to change. Humility is vital in order to acquire all of the other virtues.

Recognition, not judgment

Virtue may already be present in you — in a choice, a relationship, a responsibility you carry, a boundary you hold, how you respond to difficulty, a hope you haven’t let go of, an action you took, or a tension between two things you both care about. AVAIA may help make that more visible.

Chemistry of Virtue is not a personality type, a score, or a ranking, and it doesn’t determine anyone’s worth. AVAIA recognizes courage, patience, integrity, love, wisdom, gratitude, fortitude, restraint, or any of these 123 elements only when a Host’s own words or actions support that recognition — never as a guess, and never to tell someone which virtues they lack.

Chemistry and Agency

Chemistry becomes especially useful once someone reaches a particular kind of question: given what I understand now, how do I want to participate? Virtue provides language for the qualities that may give that participation direction.

InnerCompass may draw on virtue as part of discernment — but it doesn’t select a required virtue for you, and the Guide doesn’t decide your direction. Virtue informs discernment; it doesn’t replace it.

  • Generate a Virtue Formula for a role, feeling, or situation you name.
  • Spell your name and see which elements it maps to.

Three ways in

Identity, Capacity, and Connection aren’t three separate features here — they’re three doors into the same thing. What Your Name Spells is who you already are. A Virtue Formula names capacities available to you. And Unsung Heroes is where you learn to recognize those same capacities alive in someone else.

This same table is what every AVAIA conversation draws on. AVAIA also carries a historical lineage connecting each of the Ten Secondary Losses to one of these families as a possible lens for exploration — never a required pairing, and never proof a virtue is missing. Explore the Secondary Losses →

Virtue Formulas

Virtues rarely operate alone. Describe a role, a feeling, or a situation, and AVAIA will assemble a purposeful combination — a primary virtue, supporting virtues, and balancing virtues — using only real Chemistry of Virtue elements. Nothing is invented; every name shown is checked against the table above.

Primary Virtue + Supporting Virtue(s) + Balancing Virtue(s) = Desired Outcome

What Your Name Spells

Type a name, and each letter maps to a real element of the Chemistry of Virtue — a way to define yourself in your own words, the way people already know you by your first name before anything else. Every letter has a real element except Q, which doesn’t appear anywhere in the Chemistry of Virtue — that letter is shown honestly rather than forced.
