The View from Above, Class 8 of 10

The Loss of Control

What is actually mine to govern?

A class about feeling overwhelmed, and about the real, sometimes narrow difference between what's actually yours to govern and what never was.

What This Class Teaches

This class helps someone learn to separate what they can govern in themselves from what they cannot control in life, other people, or the future, and to practice Self-Control specifically on the first.

The Hike Lesson

I need to understand what I can govern in myself and how I participate when I cannot control life, situations, other people, or the future.

Only the Prologue and the opening of Chapter 1 of “The View From Above” were recovered as the author's own written words, told in full on this page. This class's own place in the hike exists in the source archive only as an audiobook chapter and video, without a transcript, so it couldn't be independently recovered here. What follows is Dorian's own directly-supplied recognition and lesson for this class, in his own words, not further invented scene detail.

The Virtue Family, Self-Control

Every person already carries Self-Control, whether or not it feels awake right now. This class doesn't ask you to acquire it, it asks what Self-Control can help you notice.

What It Can Look Like

  • Writing two honest lists side by side, what I can't control, what I can, and acting only from the second.
  • Participating fully in something you can't control the outcome of, rather than withdrawing entirely.
  • Governing your own response and attention, without pretending the feeling isn't there.

Personal Recognition

Nothing here has to be shared with anyone. These are just for you.

What's overwhelming me right now

Name it plainly.

What I cannot control in this

Be specific and honest.

What I can actually govern in myself, here

Your response, effort, attention, integrity.

Chemistry Recognition

Self-Control includes Awareness, Patience, Peace, Temperance, and more. Which one already shows up when you think of a time you navigated something overwhelming without losing yourself?

Practice

Once this week, when you notice overwhelm rising, write two short lists: what I can't control here, what I can. Choose one small action from the second list only.

What Becomes Possible

Not a promise that overwhelming circumstances become controllable. What can become possible is recognizing exactly what's yours to govern, and finding real participation possible even inside what isn't.

Whatever this class brought up for you, a recognition, a question, something you disagree with, something you're still turning over, take it into a private AVAIA conversation, in your own words, at your own pace, kept entirely yours.
