The View from Above, Class 4 of 10
The Loss of Self-Trust
What is my role?
A class about the quiet question that follows disruption: what is my role now? And about rebuilding trust in your own ability to act, work, and follow through.
What This Class Teaches
This class helps someone learn that self-trust, once shaken, gets rebuilt the same way it's usually built, through small, real, followed-through actions, which is exactly what Hard Work is made of.
The Hike Lesson
“I need to know that what I am doing makes a difference to me and others, and that I can act, work, and follow through.”
Only the Prologue and the opening of Chapter 1 of “The View From Above” were recovered as the author's own written words, told in full on this page. This class's own place in the hike exists in the source archive only as an audiobook chapter and video, without a transcript, so it couldn't be independently recovered here. What follows is Dorian's own directly-supplied recognition and lesson for this class, in his own words, not further invented scene detail.
The Virtue Family, Hard Work
Every person already carries Hard Work, whether or not it feels awake right now. This class doesn't ask you to acquire it, it asks what Hard Work can help you notice.
What It Can Look Like
- Completing one small task on purpose, as evidence you can trust your own follow-through.
- Separating a role that was lost from your underlying capacity to act, which the loss didn't take.
- Choosing a next action sized to what feels safely doable, not to what feels impressive.
Personal Recognition
Nothing here has to be shared with anyone. These are just for you.
Where I feel unsure of my role
Name where “what is my role now?” feels loudest.
One thing I followed through on recently
However small, name it plainly.
Who or what I make a difference to
Even one person, one place, one small thing.
Chemistry Recognition
Hard Work includes Persistence, Diligence, Self-reliance, and more. Which one already shows up when you think of something you followed through on recently? Noticing what feels dormant is equally useful.
Practice
Choose one small task this week and follow it through to completion, on purpose, as evidence, not because the task itself matters most.
What Becomes Possible
Not a promise of a settled, permanent sense of purpose. What can become possible is rebuilding real evidence, through small completed actions, that you can act and be trusted, by yourself first.
Whatever this class brought up for you, a recognition, a question, something you disagree with, something you're still turning over, take it into a private AVAIA conversation, in your own words, at your own pace, kept entirely yours.
